The City of Westminster, Colorado is one of the fastest growing areas in the metro-Denver area. Bisected by the Boulder Turnpike (Highway 36) between Denver and Boulder, Westminster is in a great location. Only a short drive from the beautiful Flat Irons and mountains of Boulder and the diverse, exciting activities of downtown Denver, the city of Westminster has been a hot-spot for new and old residents of Denver since its inception.
Before 1850, the area that would become Westminster was only used by Arapahoe Indians, buffalo, antelope and occasional trappers who passed through.
When gold was discovered in the Little Dry Creek in 1858, many pioneers in search of fortune stopped in what would become Westminster. When the Homestead Act passed in 1862 the first inhabitants of Westminster settled down, including Jim Baker who operated a toll ferry and store across the Clear Creek, where the Cherokee Trail crossed the river. Baker's Crossing, as it became widely known can still be found today in Westminster, although 150 years of infrastructure and construction has made crossing the Clear Creek a much easier task.
There is still a stained glass representation of Baker in the state Capitol building today.
In 1863, Edward Bruce Bowles came west driving a herd of cattle across the plains. Bowles built a house in Westminster, which became the first permanent structure of the town. The red brick house he built is still standing today and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Westminster Historical Society has preserved it as a museum which is open to the public for tours. In 1950, the time Denver-Boulder Turnpike was built through the heart of Westminster, the town's population was under 1,700 people. But with so many people traveling along the Turnpike the area began to boom and people started to move to Westminster. Today, the Turnpike is one of the busiest highways in the state and the city of Westminster has grown in population to over 100,000 people since its inception of a city in 1958.

Many of the schools in the northern and western areas of Westminster have been built in the last 10 years to accommodate the rapid growth that is happening in the area now. Westminster is also a great hub for high education as well.
