With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Denver is one of the nations sports capital. The city offers over 450 miles of bike paths, including beautiful trails through downtown Denver along the Cherry Creek River and the South Platte River. You even can ride from the center of Denver all the way to Franktown. There are over 80 golf courses in the area, and more than 143 free tennis courts. Denver has 397 urban parks and pathways, 29 recreation centers, 14,000 acres of Denver Mountain Parks, and 2,500 acres of Natural Areas.
Within a short drive from Denver, you will find skiing, white water rafting, hiking trails, lake and Gold Metal river fishing, camping, horseback riding, sailing or mountain biking. The Colorado Trail goes from just west of Chatfield Reservoir all the way to Durango, for those looking for an real Colorado mountain experience.
Half of Colorado is public land open to all forms of recreation with two national parks, six national monuments, 11 national forests, three national recreation areas and 30 state parks.
Enhancing and developing new parks has been part of Denver since the 1800's when the first trees were planted along the Highline Canal. The Department of Parks and Recreation oversees and operates the following:
