Castle Rock History:

Castle Rock, a stage coach stop in the late 1800's,  is located about thirty miles southeast of Denver.  It is perfect for anyone looking for the feel of a small-town. Named after a large rock that sits on the top of a plateau on the north side of town, the town of Castle Rock has been steadily growing in popularity since it was first settled on more than 100 years ago. The land that makes up Castle Rock was originally made available to white settlers under the Homestead Act of 1864. Word of gold in the area was enough to attract Castle Rock's first residents. Although the first homesteader's dreams of finding gold were never realized in Castle Rock, another important mining discovery in the area was found.

The discovery of rhyolite, a type of stone used in construction, was found near Plum Creek and eventually put this quaint little town on the map. Jeremiah Gould, one of Castle Rock's original homesteaders, donated 120 of his 160 acres of land to the community so a town called "Castle Rock" could be built. It was on this 120 acres of donated land that six main streets were built and the town conceived. In time, a 77 lots, each 50 x 112 feet, were sold off and people began to build homes. Within a short period of time, other town-like features began to pop up in Castle rock, including a train depot brought in by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway. The railroad was the perfect avenue for shipping the large amounts of rhyolite being mined from the area. It also brought in food and supplies on a level great enough to support a small town. This train depot still stands in town today, housing the Castle Rock Historical Museum.

Castle Rock was incorporated in 1881.  Most of  Castle Rock's  growth occurred since 1980.  In 1980's, Castle Rock's population was under 4,000 people.  The current population is more than 35,000 and growing. Nearly 2,500 move into Castle Rock each year.
