Denver Real Estate & Housing History Denver Squares became abundant on both sides of the Cherry Creek River following the 1863 fire that destroyed the nearly all of the wooden structures in the downtown Denver business district. The devastation resulted in a city ordinance requiring brick construction for all future buildings. Since then, building codes have changed considerably to allow numerous building styles and exteriors within the City and County of Denver.
