If you are looking to find a location that has a small-town feel but is still close to metropolitan activities and services, then you need not further than the town of Parker. Located about 10 miles southeast of Denver, the area of Parker can offer the friendliness of a hometown without the seclusion often times associated with a smaller community.
Parker Area History:
Although the Town of Parker is relatively new, formed in 1981, the area it occupies has a rich Colorado history that any resident, new or old, would be proud of. Explorers, trappers and traders during the mid 1800s were all familiar with the landscape of Parker as old Indian trails near Parker were used by many who were seeking gold, trade or adventure.
After the house was added onto and transferred ownership a number of times, James Parker bought the 20-Mile House in 1874 and expanded it to include a blacksmith shop, a general store, a school house and an official Post Office. Parker was also a stage stop on the way to Denver. About this time other families began to move to the area and an official community was born.
The incorporation of the Town of Parker in 1981 included Rowley Downs, Parker Square and the Downtown and Parker Plaza commercial areas. Since that time, Parker has annexed many other near-by areas and subdivisions making the town a healthy size of 16 square miles and bringing the town's population from a mere 300 people in the early 80s to more than 40,000 today.
Schools and Libraries:
The town of Parker is served by the Douglas County School District, one of the largest public school districts in the state. Serving more than 40,000 students, the Douglas County School District boasts some of the highest standardized test scores in the state and sends a high percentage of its high school graduates onto higher education institutions. Douglas County School District also requires each one of its graduates to perform community service projects as a graduation requirement, allowing all residents and students to take pride in their community.
The new Parker Town Center is coming in 2010.
Parker is also very close to Arapahoe Community College and Regis University facilities and campuses, making part-time course work easy, accessible and convenient.
Parker also has recently built a new library and is a part of the Douglas County Library system. One of five libraries in the system, the Parker Library offers a community feel that is comfortable for everyone from senior citizens who are looking for a great place to read a new novel, to students needing to complete research.
